Alpha-galactosidase

Alpha-galactosidase is a digestive enzyme that breaks down certain oligosaccharides in legumes and other foods.

Recheck the conclusions and examine the sources before choosing a supplement.

Main conclusion

Potential benefits

Alpha-galactosidase may reduce gas after legumes. Its action relates to specific food carbohydrates; findings for bloating and pain are less convincing. [1] [2]

What was studied

Gas after legumes: One test meal; observation after eating; Gas and bloating after meals: Two test meals; six hours of observation each. [1] [2]

How to obtain it from food

The enzyme is matched to specific foods: beans, chickpeas, lentils, soybeans, some nuts and products made from them. It helps break down GOS in the dish rather than providing a dietary “enzyme requirement.” The composition, serving size and tolerability of legumes vary. Milk sugar requires a different enzyme, lactase; alpha-galactosidase activity should not automatically be assumed for symptoms after foods containing fructans or polyols. [1] [2]

Gas after legumes

Confidence2/5

May be considered for gas specifically after legumes, taking account of the enzyme activity on the label.

Study findings. At 1200 GalU, flatulence severity and hydrogen excretion decreased; total symptoms decreased at both doses. This small sample makes it difficult to estimate a reliable effect size for usual portions.

Gas and bloating after meals

Confidence2/5

The effect on bloating and pain is less convincing than the effect on the number of gas episodes.

Study findings. There were fewer episodes of passing gas over six hours. No significant differences in bloating or pain were found.

How to read the confidence scale 1–5

The rating considers study quality, directness and applicability to the stated group and regimen. It is an editorial scale, not the probability of an individual result.

Safety and limitations

Allergy and digestive complaints may occur. In a 12-week IBS study, pain and diarrhea were more often cited as reasons for withdrawal with the enzyme; causality was not established. Beano may weaken the effect of acarbose on post-meal blood sugar. Discuss use with a professional in diabetes, pregnancy, breastfeeding or long-term use. The two-week trial reviewed in children with recurring gas complaints reported relief of some symptoms. An adult regimen should not be applied to a child. Beano use in a study may have weakened the post-meal glucose reduction with acarbose. The Canadian monograph specifies taking it with the first bite of food and activity in GalU; the licensing range is not an established optimal clinical dose.

Forms

Oral alpha-galactosidase: Origin and activity in GalU/FCC GalU matter when comparing products. Drops, tablets, capsules: Product weight and number of dosage units do not replace the enzyme activity value. Lactase and enzyme mixtures: Lactase acts on lactose; a mixture is not a study of a single enzyme.
