What is Abixa?
Abixa is a medication used for the treatment of patients with moderate to severe Alzheimer's disease. It belongs to a class of drugs known as NMDA-receptor antagonists.
Mechanism of Action
The active substance in Abixa is memantine. In the brain, memantine acts by protecting the nerve cells against excessive amounts of glutamate. Glutamate is a chemical messenger (neurotransmitter) that sends signals between nerve cells and is involved in learning and memory.
Under normal conditions, glutamate attaches to NMDA receptors on nerve cells to allow information to pass through. However, in Alzheimer's disease, there can be an overproduction of glutamate. This excess can overstimulate the receptors, leading to nerve cell damage or death, and can interfere with the brain's ability to process information correctly.
Memantine works by attaching to these NMDA receptors, which helps to reduce the abnormal activation caused by excess glutamate. This process may help to improve the transmission of nerve signals and can assist in preserving cognitive functions such as thinking, memory, and the ability to perform daily activities.
