Albendazole is an antihelmintic medication used to treat a variety of parasitic worm infections (helminthiasis). It belongs to the benzimidazole class of compounds and is structurally similar to mebendazole.
Mechanism of Action
Albendazole's primary mechanism of action involves the disruption of the parasite's internal cellular structure. It works by binding selectively to beta-tubulin, a protein subunit crucial for forming microtubules within the worm’s cells. Microtubules are essential for many cellular processes, including nutrient absorption.
By inhibiting the polymerization (assembly) of these microtubules, Albendazole causes degenerative changes in the parasite's intestinal cells. This impairs the worm's ability to absorb glucose, leading to a depletion of its energy stores (ATP), which ultimately results in the immobilization and death of the parasite.
Approved Uses
Albendazole is approved for the treatment of two major parasitic infections caused by tapeworm larvae:
- Neurocysticercosis: An infection of the nervous system caused by the pork tapeworm (Taenia solium).
- Cystic Hydatid Disease: An infection of the liver, lung, and peritoneum caused by the dog tapeworm (Echinococcus granulosus).
It is also widely used to treat numerous other parasitic infections, including those caused by pinworms, hookworms, and roundworms.
