Overview of Sumamed
What is Sumamed?
Sumamed is an antibacterial medication belonging to the macrolide group, specifically the subclass known as azalides. It contains the active substance azithromycin, which is derived from erythromycin but features a modified chemical structure that enhances its stability and tissue penetration.
Mechanism of Action
The medication works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis. It binds to the 50S subunit of the bacterial ribosome, which prevents the translocation of peptide chains. This action interferes with the ability of susceptible bacteria to grow and multiply. Depending on the concentration of the drug and the type of pathogen, its effect can be either bacteriostatic (inhibiting growth) or bactericidal (killing the bacteria).
Therapeutic Application
Sumamed is utilized in clinical practice to treat various infections caused by microorganisms sensitive to azithromycin. Because of its pharmacokinetic properties, the active substance tends to accumulate in higher concentrations within infected tissues compared to the bloodstream, and it remains active in the body for an extended period.
Its primary use includes the management of infections involving:
- The Respiratory Tract: Including conditions affecting the sinuses, throat, and lungs.
- Ear Infections: Such as inflammation of the middle ear.
- Skin and Soft Tissue: Infections involving the skin layers and underlying structures.
- Sexually Transmitted Diseases: Specific uncomplicated genital infections caused by susceptible organisms.
