Overview of Сенадексин
What is Senadexin?
Senadexin is a herbal-based medicinal product classified as a stimulant laxative. It is primarily used to manage symptoms of constipation and to facilitate bowel movements in conditions where regular evacuation is required.
Composition and Origin
The active component of Senadexin is derived from the leaves of the Senna plant (Cassia angustifolia or Cassia acutifolia). These plants contain naturally occurring compounds known as anthraquinone glycosides, specifically sennosides A and B. These substances are the primary agents responsible for the pharmacological effect of the medication.
Mechanism of Action
Senadexin works by interacting with the lining of the large intestine. Once ingested, sennosides pass through the upper digestive tract largely unchanged. Upon reaching the colon, they are converted by intestinal bacteria into active metabolites.
These metabolites perform two main functions:
- Stimulation of Motility: They irritate the mucosal lining of the colon, which triggers rhythmic contractions of the intestinal muscles (peristalsis). This speeds up the movement of fecal matter through the digestive system.
- Fluid Accumulation: The active compounds influence electrolyte and water transport, encouraging the accumulation of fluids within the intestinal lumen. This softens the stool and increases its volume, making it easier to pass.
Therapeutic Purpose
The medication is typically utilized for the short-term relief of occasional constipation. It is also employed in clinical settings where a complete emptying of the bowels is necessary, such as during preparation for certain diagnostic procedures or abdominal surgeries. By promoting predictable bowel evacuation, it helps restore temporary regularity to the digestive process.
