Overview of Ony-Tec
What is Ony-Tec?
Ony-Tec is a medicated nail lacquer developed for the treatment of fungal infections affecting the fingernails and toenails, a condition medically known as onychomycosis. It is a topical antifungal solution specifically formulated to penetrate the hard structure of the nail to reach the site of infection.
Active Ingredient
The primary active component in Ony-Tec is ciclopirox. This ingredient belongs to a class of medications known as pyridones. Unlike some other antifungal agents that primarily inhibit the growth of fungi, ciclopirox is characterized by its broad-spectrum activity, working to eliminate various types of fungi, including dermatophytes, yeasts, and molds.
Mechanism of Action
Ony-Tec functions through a unique delivery system. The lacquer utilizes a hydroxypropyl chitosan (HPCH) base. This technology is designed to be water-soluble, allowing the medication to bond with the nail keratin and penetrate the nail bed effectively without the need for aggressive filing of the nail surface.
Once the lacquer is applied, the ciclopirox works by disrupting the fungal cells in several ways:
- Interference with cellular transport: It prevents the fungi from absorbing essential nutrients.
- Depletion of internal components: It causes the leakage of necessary electrolytes and amino acids from the fungal cell.
- Disruption of DNA and RNA synthesis: It inhibits the ability of the fungi to replicate and grow.
Purpose of Treatment
The goal of using Ony-Tec is to gradually clear the fungal infection from the nail. Because nails grow slowly, the treatment aims to protect the new nail growth from being infected while the existing infected portion eventually grows out and is trimmed away. This process results in the gradual return of a healthy, clear nail appearance.
