Nicostar is a pharmaceutical formulation containing the active ingredient nicorandil. It belongs to a class of medications known as potassium-channel openers. This medication is primarily utilized in the management of cardiovascular conditions, specifically those involving the coronary arteries.
Mechanism of Action
Nicostar exhibits a dual mechanism of action that distinguishes it from other cardiovascular agents:
- Nitrate-like effect: It acts as a donor of nitric oxide, which stimulates certain enzymes to relax the smooth muscles in the venous system. This increases the capacity of the veins and reduces the amount of blood returning to the heart.
- Potassium-channel activation: By opening ATP-sensitive potassium channels, it triggers the relaxation of the smooth muscles in the arterial walls. This lead to the dilation of the coronary arteries, improving the flow of oxygenated blood to the heart muscle.
Therapeutic Purpose
