Kanova is a pharmacological treatment classified as a sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor. Unlike many other glucose-lowering medications, its mechanism of action is independent of insulin secretion and insulin sensitivity.
Mechanism of Action
The medication works by targeting the kidneys to alter how the body handles glucose. Under normal physiological conditions, the kidneys filter glucose out of the blood and then reabsorb it back into the bloodstream through specific proteins. Kanova inhibits the SGLT2 protein, which is responsible for the majority of this reabsorption in the proximal renal tubules. By blocking this process, the medication promotes the excretion of excess glucose through the urine.
