Junel Fe24 is a prescription medication indicated for use by women to prevent pregnancy. It belongs to the class of drugs known as combined oral contraceptives (COCs), as the active pills contain two synthetic female hormones: norethindrone acetate (a progestin) and ethinyl estradiol (an estrogen).
Each 28-day monthly pack is structured as a 24-day course of hormone-containing tablets, followed by four days of tablets that do not contain active hormones but include ferrous fumarate (iron). The iron-containing tablets serve as reminder pills to maintain the daily habit of taking a pill, rather than being a treatment for iron deficiency.
Junel Fe24 works primarily through a triple mechanism:
- Inhibiting Ovulation: The hormones suppress the release of an egg from the ovaries.
- Thickening Cervical Mucus: This hinders the movement of sperm toward the egg.
- Altering the Endometrium: This makes the lining of the uterus less receptive to a fertilized egg.
While its only approved indication is contraception, COCs like Junel Fe24 may also be prescribed off-label for other conditions, such as the management of moderate acne.
