Overview of Isodex
What is Isodex?
Isodex is a therapeutic formulation containing the active ingredient icodextrin, a large-molecule glucose polymer derived from starch. It is primarily used as a peritoneal dialysis solution to assist in the removal of waste products and excess fluid from the body when the kidneys are no longer able to perform these functions adequately.
Mechanism of Action
Unlike traditional dialysis solutions that rely on high concentrations of glucose to draw fluid out of the blood, Isodex functions through a process called colloid osmosis. Because icodextrin molecules are large, they are absorbed slowly from the abdominal cavity into the bloodstream. This slow absorption creates an osmotic pressure gradient that pulls fluid from the blood vessels into the peritoneal cavity over an extended period.
Clinical Application
Isodex is specifically designed for use during long-dwell exchanges, such as the overnight dwell in automated peritoneal dialysis (APD) or the longest daytime dwell in continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD). Its chemical properties allow it to remain effective for 8 to 16 hours, making it an alternative for patients who require enhanced fluid removal that may not be fully achieved with standard glucose solutions.
Composition and Characteristics

- Electrolytes: The solution typically contains essential electrolytes such as sodium, chloride, lactate, magnesium, and calcium to help maintain the body's electrolyte balance during the exchange process.
- Physical Properties: It is a clear, colorless to pale yellow sterile solution intended for intraperitoneal administration only.
