Overview of Folligon
Folligon is a veterinary pharmaceutical product whose active ingredient is Pregnant Mare Serum Gonadotrophin (PMSG), also known as equine chorionic gonadotropin (eCG). This hormone is a complex glycoprotein with biological activity similar to both Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH) and Luteinizing Hormone (LH) in non-equid species, giving it a prolonged effect in the body.
Therapeutic Use
Folligon is used exclusively in veterinary medicine for reproductive management in a variety of domestic animals, including cattle, sheep, and swine. It is not approved for human use. The primary applications of the drug involve stimulating the ovaries to develop follicles and induce ovulation, which can aid in the control of fertility problems in livestock. Specific uses include the synchronization of ovulation, induction of estrus, and superovulation in donor animals for embryo transfer.
Due to its dual hormone-like activity (FSH and LH), PMSG stimulates the growth and maturation of ovarian follicles and can promote spermatogenesis in males. The product is typically supplied as a freeze-dried powder that requires reconstitution with a sterile diluent for administration by a veterinarian.
