What is Esmatac?
Esmatac is a pharmacological treatment designed to manage symptoms associated with acid-related gastrointestinal disorders. Mechanism of Action
The primary function of Esmatac is the inhibition of the gastric H+/K+-ATPase enzyme system, often referred to as the proton pump. This enzyme is located in the parietal cells of the stomach wall and represents the final step in the secretion of hydrochloric acid. By binding to these pumps, Esmatac reduces the volume of acid released into the digestive tract, regardless of the stimulus that triggered the production.
Clinical Applications
Esmatac is utilized in several clinical contexts where the reduction of gastric acidity is beneficial for healing or symptom relief:
- Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD): It is used to manage the symptoms of acid reflux, where stomach acid flows back into the esophagus, potentially causing irritation or damage to the esophageal lining.
- Peptic Ulcer Disease: The medication is employed to facilitate the healing of ulcers located in the stomach or the upper part of the small intestine (duodenum).
- Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome: It is used in the management of rare pathological hypersecretory conditions where the stomach produces excessive amounts of acid.
- Erosive Esophagitis: Esmatac aids in the repair of tissue damage in the esophagus caused by prolonged exposure to gastric acid.
