It is specifically classified as a penicillinase-resistant penicillin, meaning its structure makes it effective against bacteria that produce an enzyme called penicillinase (or beta-lactamase), which typically deactivates many common penicillins.
How It Works
Dicloxacillin works by acting as a bactericidal agent—it kills bacteria by interfering with their ability to build and maintain a protective outer layer, known as the cell wall. The drug binds to specific proteins inside the bacterial cell wall, which prevents the final step of the cell wall's construction. This leads to the weakening and eventual breakdown (lysis) of the bacterial cell.
Approved Uses
The primary role of dicloxacillin is to treat mild-to-moderate infections that are confirmed or strongly suspected to be caused by susceptible, penicillinase-producing bacteria, particularly Staphylococcus aureus. Common indications may include skin and soft tissue infections (such as cellulitis, impetigo, and boils), certain respiratory tract infections, and as part of the treatment for bone or joint infections.
