Overview of Cusicrom
What is Cusicrom?
Cusicrom is an ophthalmic medication containing sodium cromoglicate, a therapeutic agent classified as a mast cell stabilizer. It is primarily used to manage and alleviate symptoms associated with allergic conjunctivitis, a condition where the eyes become inflamed due to exposure to allergens such as pollen, pet dander, or dust mites.
Mechanism of Action
The active ingredient, sodium cromoglicate, works by stabilizing the membrane of mast cells found in the conjunctiva of the eye. When these cells are exposed to allergens, they typically release inflammatory mediators, such as histamine, which cause redness, itching, and swelling. By preventing the release of these substances, the medication helps to control the allergic response before it fully develops.
Therapeutic Use
Cusicrom is intended for the symptomatic relief of various forms of allergic eye inflammation, including:
- Acute Allergic Conjunctivitis: Sudden-onset inflammation often triggered by seasonal allergens.
- Chronic Allergic Conjunctivitis: Long-term eye irritation caused by year-round environmental factors.
- Vernal Keratoconjunctivitis: A more severe, recurrent form of allergic inflammation that typically affects children and young adults.
Because of its preventative mechanism, the medication is most effective when used consistently to maintain the stability of the mast cells during periods of allergen exposure.
