Chloramphenicol is a broad-spectrum antibiotic used to treat severe, life-threatening bacterial infections when less toxic alternatives are ineffective or contraindicated. It was originally derived from the bacterium Streptomyces venezuelae and is now typically produced synthetically.

Its mechanism of action involves interfering with bacterial growth by binding to the 50S subunit of the bacterial ribosome, which prevents the formation of peptide bonds essential for building proteins. By inhibiting protein synthesis, the drug is primarily bacteriostatic (stops growth) but can be bactericidal (kills bacteria) against highly susceptible organisms or at high concentrations.
Due to the potential for severe side effects, including fatal aplastic anemia, systemic use of Chloramphenicol is restricted to infections where its benefits significantly outweigh the risks, such as typhoid fever, plague, and certain forms of meningitis. It is also used topically, in the form of eye drops or ointment, to treat susceptible superficial eye infections like bacterial conjunctivitis. Administration can be oral, intravenous, or topical, depending on the infection being treated.
