Overview of Альфарона
What is Альфарона? (Interferon Alfa-2b)
Альфарона (Alfarona) is a brand name for the drug Interferon alfa-2b, recombinant, a synthetic (lab-made) version of a naturally occurring protein in the human body known as an alpha interferon. Interferons belong to a class of signaling proteins called cytokines, which are essential components of the immune system that regulate the body's defenses against pathogens and tumors.
Interferon alfa-2b functions as an immunomodulating agent and an antineoplastic (anti-cancer) agent. Its mechanism of action involves binding to specific receptors on the surface of cells, which activates an intracellular signaling cascade known as the JAK-STAT pathway. This activation leads to the expression of various genes that help establish an antiviral state within cells, inhibit abnormal cell proliferation, and boost immune cell activity, such as that of Natural Killer (NK) cells.
Approved Medical Uses
As a drug, Interferon alfa-2b is used to treat a variety of conditions, often alone or in combination with other medications. Its approved indications include:
- Chronic Hepatitis B and C infections.
- Certain cancers, such as hairy cell leukemia, malignant melanoma, and AIDS-related Kaposi's sarcoma.
- Condylomata acuminata (genital or perianal warts).
