Altoran

Altoran medoxomil is an angiotensin II receptor antagonist indicated for the treatment of mild to moderate essential hypertension. Altoran medoxomil is a prodrug of Altoran marketed as "Edarbi" by Takeda. Altoran medoxomil has so far been shown to be superior to olmesartan and valsartan in lowering blood pressure.

Benzydamine hydrochloride relieves the pain and discomfort of a variety of ulcerative conditions. It has some topical anti-inflammatory and analgesic (pain killing) effects.

Altoran is an angiotensin II receptor antagonist. Altoran keeps blood vessels from narrowing, which lowers blood pressure and improves blood flow.

Altoran is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension).

Usual Adult Dose for Hypertension

80 mg orally once a day

Comments: Consider a starting dose of 40 mg orally once a day for patients on high diuretic doses.

Precautions

US BOXED WARNING:

-FETAL TOXICITY: If pregnancy is detected, discontinue this drug as soon as possible. Drugs that act directly on the renin angiotensin system (RAS) can cause injury and death to the developing fetus.

Safety and efficacy have not been established in patients younger than 18 years.

Administration advice: Administer with or without food.

Monitoring: Assess renal function and serum electrolytes prior to initiating therapy and periodically during treatment.

Patient advice:

-Females of childbearing age should be informed of the consequences of exposure to this drug during pregnancy; ask these patients to report pregnancies as soon as possible.

-Encourage patients to report any lightheadedness that may occur during treatment initiation and to stop taking this drug until consulting a physician if syncope occurs.

-Dehydration may lead to excess blood pressure reduction; inform patients to contact their healthcare provider if they experience excessive perspiration, vomiting, or diarrhea.

Benzydamine hydrochloride oral rinse is not suitable for use in children under 12 years. The spray can be used in children at a dose of up to 1 puff per 4kg of body weight (under 6) or 4 puffs (6-12 years) every 1.5 - 3 hours.

Use Altoran medoxomil as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

• An extra patient leaflet is available with Altoran medoxomil. Talk to your pharmacist if you have questions about this information.
• Take Altoran medoxomil by mouth with or without food.
• Taking Altoran medoxomil at the same time each day will help you remember to take it.
• Take Altoran medoxomil on a regular schedule to get the most benefit from it.
• Continue to take Altoran medoxomil even if you feel well. Do not miss any doses.
• If you miss a dose of Altoran medoxomil, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.

In addition to its needed effects, some unwanted effects may be caused by Altoran medoxomil. In the event that any of these side effects do occur, they may require medical attention.

Major Side Effects

You should check with your doctor immediately if any of these side effects occur when taking Altoran medoxomil:

Rare

• Blurred vision
• confusion
• dizziness, faintness, or lightheadedness when getting up suddenly from a lying or sitting position
• sweating
• unusual tiredness or weakness

Minor Side Effects

Some of the side effects that can occur with Altoran medoxomil may not need medical attention. As your body adjusts to the medicine during treatment these side effects may go away. Your health care professional may also be able to tell you about ways to reduce or prevent some of these side effects. If any of the following side effects continue, are bothersome or if you have any questions about them, check with your health care professional:

• dizziness
• lack or loss of strength
• muscle spasm
• nausea
