Overview of Zaxine
What is Zaxine?
Zaxine is an oral antibiotic containing the active substance rifaximin. It belongs to a class of medications known as rifamycins. Unlike many other antibiotics that are absorbed into the bloodstream to treat infections throughout the body, Zaxine is non-systemic. This means it passes through the stomach and into the intestines without being significantly absorbed into the blood, allowing the medication to concentrate its effects primarily within the gastrointestinal tract.
Mechanism of Action
Zaxine works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis. It binds to the enzyme responsible for transcription in bacteria, known as DNA-dependent RNA polymerase. By preventing the bacteria from producing the proteins necessary for survival and reproduction, the medication helps to reduce the overall bacterial load in the gut.
Because it remains largely confined to the digestive system, it targets local bacteria while having minimal impact on the rest of the body.
Primary Uses
Zaxine is utilized for several conditions related to intestinal health and liver function:
- Hepatic Encephalopathy: In individuals with advanced liver disease, the liver may struggle to filter toxins like ammonia from the blood. Bacteria in the digestive tract are a primary source of this ammonia. Zaxine is used to reduce the population of these ammonia-producing bacteria, which helps to decrease the risk of recurrence of overt hepatic encephalopathy symptoms, such as confusion, disorientation, and impaired motor function.
- Irritable Bowel Syndrome with Diarrhea (IBS-D): It is also used to manage symptoms in adults with irritable bowel syndrome where diarrhea is the predominant symptom. By altering the bacterial composition in the small and large intestines, it can help alleviate bloating, abdominal pain, and stool urgency.
Physical Characteristics
Zaxine is typically produced as a film-coated tablet. The concentration of the active ingredient is formulated to ensure that the medication remains active throughout its transit in the intestinal environment.
