Understanding Vildagliptin
Vildagliptin is an oral medication categorized as a dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitor. It is primarily utilized in the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus, a condition characterized by high levels of blood glucose resulting from the body's inability to produce enough insulin or to use it effectively.
Mechanism of Action
The medication works by targeting the DPP-4 enzyme. This enzyme is responsible for breaking down incretin hormones, such as glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1). Incretins are naturally occurring hormones released by the intestines throughout the day, with levels increasing significantly after eating.
By inhibiting the DPP-4 enzyme, vildagliptin increases the concentration and prolongs the activity of these incretin hormones. This leads to two primary physiological effects:
