Overview of Unokavi
Unokavi is a therapeutic medication used in the management of paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH), a rare and chronic blood disorder. It belongs to a class of drugs known as complement inhibitors. Specifically, it is designed to target and bind to the C5 protein within the body's complement system, which is a functional part of the immune response.
Mechanism of Action
In individuals with PNH, the complement system prematurely destroys red blood cells, a process called hemolysis. This destruction occurs because the red blood cells lack certain protective proteins on their surface.
Unokavi works by blocking the cleavage of the C5 protein into its active forms (C5a and C5b). By inhibiting this specific step in the complement cascade, the medication prevents the formation of the membrane attack complex, which is responsible for the destruction of red blood cells. The goal of this mechanism is to reduce the breakdown of red blood cells and alleviate the associated symptoms of the disorder.
Therapeutic Purpose
The primary purpose of Unokavi is to stabilize red blood cell levels and reduce the need for blood transfusions in patients with PNH. By controlling intravascular hemolysis, the medication aims to manage the underlying biological complications of the disease. It is administered as a long-term maintenance therapy to provide continuous regulation of the complement system.
