What is Thyrofix?
Thyrofix is a medication containing the active substance levothyroxine sodium, which is a synthetic version of the primary thyroid hormone, thyroxine (T4). It is designed to replace or supplement the hormone naturally produced by the thyroid gland when the body cannot produce sufficient amounts on its own.
Mechanism of Action
In a healthy body, the thyroid gland captures iodine from the blood to produce thyroid hormones, which are essential for regulating the body's metabolic rate. Levothyroxine sodium, the active ingredient in Thyrofix, is chemically identical to the natural hormone T4.
Once ingested, the synthetic T4 is converted by the body into triiodothyronine (T3), the more active form of the hormone. This process allows the medication to mimic the natural physiological rhythm of the endocrine system, ensuring that cells throughout the body receive the necessary signals to maintain metabolic balance.
Clinical Applications
Thyrofix is primarily used in the management of thyroid-related conditions where hormone levels are deficient or where thyroid activity needs to be suppressed. These conditions include:
