What is Omeprazol?
Omeprazol is a medication that belongs to a class of drugs known as proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). It is primarily used to manage conditions related to excessive gastric acid production. By targeting the acid-producing pumps in the stomach lining, it reduces the overall volume of acid released into the digestive system.
Mechanism of Action
The medication works by inhibiting the enzyme system known as H^+/K^+-ATPase, commonly referred to as the proton pump. This system is found within the parietal cells of the stomach wall and represents the final step of acid secretion. When this pump is inhibited, the stomach produces less hydrochloric acid, which allows the esophageal and gastric mucosa to recover from acid-related irritation or injury.
Therapeutic Applications
Omeprazol is commonly utilized in the management of several gastrointestinal profiles:
- Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD): It helps alleviate symptoms by reducing the backflow of acid into the esophagus.
