Understanding Klor-Con M20
Klor-Con M20 is an extended-release oral medication containing potassium chloride, an essential electrolyte for the body. The drug is indicated for the treatment and prevention of hypokalemia (low blood potassium levels), a condition that can result from certain diseases, prolonged vomiting or diarrhea, or the use of specific diuretics.
Mechanism and Formulation
The active component, the potassium ion (K^+), is vital for several physiological processes, including the maintenance of cellular tonicity, the transmission of nerve impulses, and the contraction of cardiac, skeletal, and smooth muscle.
Klor-Con M20 uses a specialized Micro-Dispersible Technology formulation. This tablet contains individually microencapsulated potassium chloride crystals designed to disperse quickly after ingestion. This formulation is intended to slow the release of potassium throughout the gastrointestinal tract, which helps to reduce the likelihood of a high localized concentration of potassium chloride that could irritate the gastrointestinal wall.
