Klavunat is an oral prescription medication that is a combination of two active drugs: the \beta-lactam antibiotic Amoxicillin and the \beta-lactamase inhibitor Clavulanate Potassium. The combination is also known by its generic name, co-amoxiclav or amoxicillin/clavulanic acid, and is used globally to treat a variety of bacterial infections.
Mechanism of Action
Amoxicillin is a penicillin-like antibiotic that functions by interfering with the development of the bacterial cell wall, which ultimately causes the bacterium to die. However, many bacteria have developed resistance by producing enzymes called \beta-lactamases. These enzymes can break down and inactivate the amoxicillin molecule.
Clavulanate potassium is added to Klavunat to overcome this resistance. Clavulanate is not an antibiotic itself, but it acts as a "suicide inhibitor" by binding permanently to and deactivating the \beta-lactamase enzymes. This protective mechanism shields the amoxicillin from destruction, allowing it to remain effective against bacteria that would otherwise be resistant to amoxicillin alone, thereby broadening the spectrum of bacteria the medication can treat.
Approved Uses
Klavunat is indicated for the treatment of infections caused by susceptible \beta-lactamase-producing bacteria. These often include infections of the:
- Lower respiratory tract
- Middle ear (acute otitis media)
- Sinus
- Skin and soft tissues
- Urinary tract
