Research for Corn Earworm, Cotton Bollworm, and Soybean Podworm (Helicoverpa zea)
Research for Heligen, which contains a naturally occurring virus, has primarily involved field and laboratory studies focusing on its use in crops like corn, cotton, and soybeans to manage the caterpillar known by several names, including the corn earworm, cotton bollworm, and soybean podworm. These studies are designed to see how the product performs under real-world farming conditions and in controlled settings.
Studies measured lower population numbers in the smallest stages of the pest when using Heligen. For instance, in laboratory testing, studies reported very high rates of mortality in the first, second, and third caterpillar stages, typically within four to six days, when exposed to the product. However, the same studies also indicated that the mortality rates for the larger, more mature caterpillars (fourth and fifth stages) were much lower, which was a factor studied alongside the pest’s lifecycle.
A key area of uncertainty and ongoing research involves the speed of the product’s effect compared to other types of treatments. While the virus needs time to take its effect on the pest, studies have noted that an initial application may lead to the release of more virus into the crop environment, and researchers have explored whether this affects later generations of pests. There is also limited evidence to suggest that some regional populations of the pest, which have developed resistance to other control methods, may also show different levels of how they react to the virus in Heligen. Further study is needed to understand the long-term outcomes on various resistant populations.
Research for Tobacco Budworm (Heliothis virescens)
The evidence base for the tobacco budworm is generally less extensive in published reports. The research that exists typically involves using Heligen alongside other control products or comparing it directly to different treatments. These studies aim to explore its potential role in pest management for this pest, particularly in crops like hemp.
Research for this pest is less developed than for the corn earworm. In one field experiment, researchers recorded lower numbers of caterpillars in plots treated with Heligen compared to plots that received no treatment or certain other treatments. This indicates a measurement in the field, but the specific role of Heligen when used alone is often less clearly defined in the current published data because it is frequently tested as part of a mix.
A major gap in the research for the tobacco budworm is the lack of detailed studies that focus solely on Heligen and the reported mortality rates across different stages of the caterpillar’s growth. Much of the evidence comes from trials in specific regional settings, such as the mid-Atlantic United States. The evidence is limited on how its effect might vary across different geographic areas or crop types that are attacked by the tobacco budworm, leaving its overall role in pest management somewhat uncertain.
