What is Glottyl?
Glottyl is a pharmaceutical formulation containing the active ingredient glibornuride. It belongs to a class of medications known as second-generation sulfonylureas, which are primarily used in the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus.
Mechanism of Action
The primary function of Glottyl is to assist the body in regulating blood glucose levels. It works by stimulating the beta cells in the pancreas to increase the secretion of endogenous insulin. This effect is dependent on the presence of functioning pancreatic beta cells, which is why the medication is specific to type 2 diabetes rather than type 1 diabetes, where insulin production is absent.
In addition to promoting insulin release, sulfonylureas like glibornuride may enhance the sensitivity of peripheral tissues—such as the liver, muscles, and adipose tissue—to insulin. This combined action helps to lower blood sugar levels during fasting periods and after meals.
Clinical Application
