Corzide 80/5 (Nadolol (Corzide 80/5 80/5) and Corzide 80/5 Tablets) is indicated for the treatment of hypertension, to lower blood pressure. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk ononfatal cardiovascular events, primarily strokes and myocardial infarctions. These benefits have been seen in controlled trials of antihypertensive drugs from a wide variety of pharmacologic classes including the classes to which this drug principally belongs. There are no controlled trials demonstrating risk reduction with Corzide 80/5.
Control of high blood pressure should be part of comprehensive cardiovascular risk management, including, as appropriate, lipid control, diabetes management, antithrombotic therapy, smoking cessation, exercise, and limited sodium intake. Many patients will require more than one drug to achieve blood pressure goals. For specific advice on goals and management, see published guidelines, such as those of the National High Blood Pressure Education Program's Joint National Committee on Prevention, Detection, Evaluation, and Treatment of High Blood Pressure (JNC).
Numerous antihypertensive drugs, from a variety of pharmacologic classes and with different mechanisms of action, have been shown in randomized controlled trials to reduce cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, and it can be concluded that it is blood pressure reduction, and not some other pharmacologic property of the drugs, that is largely responsible for those benefits. The largest and most consistent cardiovascular outcome benefit has been a reduction in the risk of stroke, but reductions in myocardial infarction and cardiovascular mortality also have been seen regularly.
Elevated systolic or diastolic pressure causes increased cardiovascular risk, and the absolute risk increase per mmHg is greater at higher blood pressures, so that even modest reductions of severe hypertension can provide substantial benefit. Relative risk reduction from blood pressure reduction is similar across populations with varying absolute risk, so the absolute benefit is greater in patients who are at higher risk independent of their hypertension (for example, patients with diabetes or hyperlipidemia), and such patients would be expected to benefit from more aggressive treatment to a lower blood pressure goal.
Some antihypertensive drugs have smaller blood pressure effects (as monotherapy) in black patients, and many antihypertensive drugs have additional approved indications and effects (e.g., on angina, heart failure, or diabetic kidney disease). These considerations may guide selection of therapy.
Corzide 80/5 (Nadolol (Corzide 80/5 80/5) and Corzide 80/5 Tablets) is not indicated for initial therapy of hypertension. If the fixed combination represents the dose titrated to the individual patient's needs, it may be more convenient than the separate components.
Corzide 80/5 is a thiazide diuretic (water pill) that helps prevent your body from absorbing too much salt, which can cause fluid retention.
Nadolol (Corzide 80/5 80/5) is in a group of drugs called beta-blockers. Beta-blockers affect the heart and circulation (blood flow through arteries and veins).
The combination of Corzide 80/5 and Nadolol (Corzide 80/5 80/5) is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension).
Corzide 80/5 and Nadolol (Corzide 80/5 80/5) may also be used for other purposes not listed in this medication guide.
DOSAGE MUST BE INDIVIDUALIZED. Corzide 80/5 MAY BE ADMINISTERED WITHOUT REGARD TO MEALS.
Corzide 80/5 is usually given at a dose of 5 mg daily. The usual initial dose of Nadolol (Corzide 80/5 80/5) is 40 mg once daily whether used alone or in combination with a diuretic. Corzide 80/5 in Corzide 80/5 is 30 percent more bioavailable than that of 5 mg Naturetin tablets. Conversion from 5 mg NATURETIN to Corzide 80/5 represents a 30 percent increase in dose of Corzide 80/5.
The initial dose of Corzide 80/5 (Nadolol (Corzide 80/5 80/5) and Corzide 80/5 Tablets) may therefore be the 40 mg/5 mg tablet once daily. When the antihypertensive response is not satisfactory, the dose may be increased by administering the 80 mg/5 mg tablet once daily.
When necessary, another antihypertensive agent may be added gradually beginning with 50 percent of the usual recommended starting dose to avoid an excessive fall in blood pressure.
Dosage Adjustment in Renal Failure
Absorbed Nadolol (Corzide 80/5 80/5) is excreted principally by the kidneys and, although nonrenal elimination does occur, dosage adjustments are necessary in patients with renal impairment. The following dose intervals are recommended:
Creatinine Clearance (mL/min/1.73 m²) | Dosage Interval (hours) |
> 50 | 24 |
31-50 | 24-36 |
10-30 | 24-48 |
< 10 | 40-60 |

There are specific as well as general uses of a drug or medicine. A medicine can be used to prevent a disease, treat a disease over a period or cure a disease. It can also be used to treat the particular symptom of the disease. The drug use depends on the form the patient takes it. It may be more useful in injection form or sometimes in tablet form. The drug can be used for a single troubling symptom or a life-threatening condition. While some medications can be stopped after few days, some drugs need to be continued for prolonged period to get the benefit from it.This medication is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). Lowering high blood pressure helps prevent strokes, heart attacks, and kidney problems. This product contains 2 medications, Nadolol (Corzide 80/5 80/5) and Corzide 80/5. Nadolol (Corzide 80/5 80/5) belongs to a class of drugs known as beta blockers. It works by keeping certain natural chemicals such as epinephrine from acting on the heart and blood vessels. This effect lowers the heart rate, blood pressure, and strain on the heart. Corzide 80/5 is a "water pill" (diuretic) and causes your body to get rid of extra salt and water. This effect may increase the amount of urine you make when you first start the medication. It also helps relax the blood vessels so that blood can flow more easily.
