What is Liotir?
Liotir is a brand name for a medication containing liothyronine sodium, which is a synthetic form of the natural thyroid hormone triiodothyronine (T3). The thyroid gland naturally produces two main hormones: thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3), with T3 being the more active form. Liothyronine is chemically identical to the T3 hormone made in the human body, acting as a replacement when there is a deficiency.
Therapeutic Use
Liotir is primarily used to treat hypothyroidism, a condition where the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormones. By replacing the deficient hormone, Liotir helps to increase the body's metabolic rate, which can improve symptoms such as fatigue, weight gain, constipation, and unusual sensitivity to cold. It may also be used to suppress thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) in the management of certain types of thyroid cancer.
Compared to levothyroxine (synthetic T4), liothyronine has a more rapid onset of action and a shorter half-life. The use of liothyronine sodium has been available since 1956 and is often reserved for specific clinical situations, such as managing myxedema coma, a severe complication of hypothyroidism.
