Overview of Sandimmun
What is Sandimmun?
Sandimmun is a medication containing the active substance cyclosporine, which belongs to a class of drugs known as immunosuppressants. These medications are used to decrease the body's immune responses by inhibiting the activity of specific cells in the immune system, particularly T-lymphocytes.
Primary Mechanism and Use
The medication works by interfering with the signals that normally cause the immune system to attack foreign tissue or its own cells. This action is essential in various medical contexts where the immune response needs to be controlled or suppressed.
Therapeutic Applications
Sandimmun is primarily utilized in the following areas:
- Transplantation: It is used to prevent the body from rejecting a transplanted organ, such as a kidney, liver, heart, lung, or pancreas. It is also used to prevent rejection following bone marrow transplantation and to treat graft-versus-host disease.
- Autoimmune Conditions: It is used to treat severe cases of certain non-transplant conditions where the immune system is overactive. This includes specific types of severe skin conditions like psoriasis and atopic dermatitis, certain forms of nephrotic syndrome (a kidney disease), and severe rheumatoid arthritis.
- Ophthalmology: It may be used in the treatment of endogenous uveitis, an inflammation of the middle layer of the eye that is not caused by an infection.
By modulating the immune system, Sandimmun helps maintain the function of transplanted organs and reduces the symptoms and progression of various inflammatory and autoimmune disorders.
