Understanding Cinase
Cinase is a pharmaceutical preparation containing streptokinase, an enzyme derived from certain strains of streptococci. It belongs to a group of medications known as thrombolytics or fibrinolytic agents, which are designed to interact with the body's natural blood-clotting mechanisms.
Mechanism of Action
The primary function of Cinase is to facilitate the breakdown of blood clots. It works by activating plasminogen, a naturally occurring protein in the blood, converting it into the enzyme plasmin. Plasmin is responsible for degrading fibrin, the structural protein that forms the framework of a blood clot. By promoting this conversion, the medication assists in dissolving established thrombi within the vascular system.
Clinical Applications
Cinase is utilized in various clinical scenarios where the presence of an acute blood clot poses a risk to organ function or blood flow. Its application is generally centered on restoring circulation in the following conditions:
- Myocardial Infarction: Used during the early stages of a heart attack to dissolve clots in the coronary arteries.
- Pulmonary Embolism: Employed to treat large clots that have migrated to the lungs, obstructing pulmonary blood flow.
- Deep Vein Thrombosis: Utilized in specific cases of extensive clotting in the deep veins of the legs.
- Arterial Thromboembolism: Applied to address clots that have formed in or moved into the peripheral arteries.
Pharmacological Properties
Unlike direct anticoagulants which prevent new clots from forming, Cinase is specifically aimed at the lysis of existing clots. Because it is a protein-based agent, its activity depends on its ability to circulate and reach the site of the obstruction. Once administered, it initiates a systemic fibrinolytic state, meaning it increases the clot-dissolving activity throughout the bloodstream for a period of time.
