Overview of CoDiovan
What is CoDiovan?
CoDiovan is a combination medication used for the management of high blood pressure, also known as hypertension. It contains two active ingredients that work in different ways to help control blood pressure levels: valsartan and hydrochlorothiazide.
Active Components
- Valsartan: This ingredient belongs to a class of medications called angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs). It works by blocking the action of angiotensin II, a substance in the body that causes blood vessels to tighten and narrow. By inhibiting this effect, valsartan helps blood vessels relax and widen, which facilitates smoother blood flow.
- Hydrochlorothiazide: This component is a thiazide diuretic, often referred to as a "water pill." It works by increasing the amount of salt and water the kidneys remove from the blood, which is then passed out through urine. This process helps reduce the overall volume of fluid circulating through the blood vessels.
Mechanism of Action
When these two medications are used together in CoDiovan, they provide a dual approach to blood pressure management. While the diuretic reduces fluid volume, the ARB prevents blood vessel constriction. This combined effect is often more effective at lowering blood pressure than using either medication alone.
Maintaining blood pressure within a target range is important because uncontrolled hypertension increases the workload on the heart and arteries. Over time, this pressure can lead to damage in the blood vessels of the brain, heart, and kidneys.
