Therapeutic indications

The reducing properties of ascorbic acid are useful in the treatment of idiopathic methemoglobinuria. Useful in large doses to acidify urine.

Undesirable effects

The most frequently noted adverse effect of large doses of ascorbic acid is diarrhea. Also, acidification of the urine by large amounts of ascorbic acid may cause the precipitation of urate, oxalate, or cystine stones in the urinary tract.
