Hypersensitivity to iodine or povidone, or to any of the excipients of Betadine Antiseptic Paint. Not to be used in hyperfunction of the thyroid (hyperthyroidism), other manifestations of thyroid diseases, as well as before and after radioiodine therapy for hyperthyroidism, until a lasting cure has been obtained.
It should not be used for 4 weeks prior to radioiodine scintigraphy or radioiodine treatment, or thyroid carcinoma.
Patients with goitre, thryroid nodules or other thyroid diseases (especially in elderly patients), are at risk of developing thyroid hyperfunction (hyperthyroidism) from the administration of large amounts of iodine.
Not to be used in patients on concurrent lithium therapy.
Use in pregnancy & lactation: Betadine Antiseptic Paint should only be used if strictly prescribed by the physician. Its use should be kept to the absolute minimum, as absorbed iodine can cross the placental barrier and can also be secreted in breast milk. This also applies to newborns and infants up to 2 years. Betadine Gargle and Mouthwash may induce transient hypothyroidism in foetus or in newborn. Thus, it should be avoided in such situations. In these cases, it is necessary to check a child's thyroid function, especially in areas known for endemic low dietary iodine and tendency of having goiter. Also, any possible ingestion of the Betadine Antiseptic Paint by the infant must be absolutely avoided.
Use in children: Not to be used in infants with <1.5 kg body weight.
Do not apply other medications to the same affected areas that have been treated with Betadine Gargle and Mouthwash, unless told by the doctor.
The polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP)-iodine complex is effective at pH of between 2 and 7. It has to be expected that the complex will react with protein and other unsaturated organic compounds, leading to impairment of its effectiveness.
The concomitant use of other externally-applied wound healing medicines/preparations may alter the effect of Betadine Gargle and Mouthwash or both. Products containing enzymatic component, alkali, acetylsalicylic acid, bismuth, mercury, silver, hydrogen peroxide, tannic acid and taurolidine may interact with Betadine Gargle and Mouthwash and should not be used concomitantly.
Using this treatment may interfere with tests on thyroid function and can make a planned treatment of the thyroid with iodine impossible. After the end of the treatment, an interval of at least 1-2 weeks should be allowed before a new scintigram is carried out.
Contamination with Betadine Gargle and Mouthwash of several types of tests for the detection of occult blood in feces or blood in urine may produce false-positive results.
It is not likely that other drugs taken orally or injected will have an effect on externally applied Betadine Gargle and Mouthwash.
Betadine Gargle and Mouthwash products when used concomitantly or immediately after application of octenidine-containing antiseptics in the same or adjacent sites may lead to transient dark discolorations in the areas involved.
Due to the oxidative effect of Betadine Gargle and Mouthwash preparations, various diagnostic agents can show false-positive laboratory results (eg, tests with toluidine or gum guaiac for the determination of hemoglobin or glucose in the stool or the urine).
Absorption of iodine from Betadine Gargle and Mouthwash solution may lower the iodine uptake of the thyroid that can lead to interference with various investigations [thyroid scintigraphy, determination of protein-bound iodine (PBI)], radioiodine diagnostics and can make a planned treatment of the thyroid with iodine (radioiodine therapy) impossible. After the end of the treatment, an appropriate interval should be allowed before a new scintigram is carried out.
Do not start a new treatment medication without telling the physician.
