Katora is a pharmaceutical treatment categorized as a potassium-competitive acid blocker (P-CAB). It is primarily used to manage conditions related to gastric acid secretion, such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), erosive esophagitis, and gastric ulcers.
Mechanism of Action
Unlike traditional proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) that require activation in an acidic environment and bind irreversibly to the proton pump, Katora works by competitively inhibiting the potassium ions on the hydrogen-potassium ATPase (the acid pump) in the stomach lining. This mechanism allows for a rapid onset of action and provides a sustained suppression of gastric acid secretion.
Because Katora does not require an acidic environment to become active, it can effectively inhibit acid pumps regardless of whether they are actively secreting acid at the time of administration. This characteristic contributes to its consistent effect throughout the day and night.
