What is Dehydrated Alcohol?
Dehydrated alcohol is a highly concentrated form of ethanol, containing no less than 98% ethyl alcohol by volume. It is a clear, colorless, and volatile liquid that is used in clinical settings for its specific chemical and physical properties. Unlike standard antiseptic alcohol solutions, dehydrated alcohol is prepared specifically for medical procedures where the presence of water could interfere with the desired therapeutic outcome.
Characteristics and Mechanism
Dehydrated alcohol acts as a neurolytic agent. When it comes into contact with nerve tissue, it causes the extraction of lipids from the neural sheath and the precipitation of proteins within the nerve cells. This process, known as sclerosis, results in the interruption of nerve signal transmission. This effect is generally localized to the area of application.
Clinical Applications
In medical practice, dehydrated alcohol is primarily utilized for the following purposes:
- Nerve Blocks: It is used to provide relief for chronic, intractable pain by permanently or semi-permanently interrupting pain pathways. This is often reserved for patients with severe pain that has not responded to other treatments.
- Sclerotherapy: It may be used to treat certain types of vascular malformations or cysts. By causing controlled damage to the lining of these structures, the alcohol causes them to collapse and eventually be replaced by scar tissue.
- Ablation: In specific cardiac procedures, small amounts may be used to target and disable precise areas of heart tissue that are causing irregular heart rhythms.
