Zithromycin, commonly known by its generic name azithromycin, is a broad-spectrum antibiotic belonging to the macrolide class. It is designed to inhibit the growth of bacteria by interfering with their protein synthesis, which prevents the organisms from multiplying and spreading within the body.
Therapeutic Class and Mechanism
As a macrolide antibiotic, Zithromycin works by binding to the 50S subunit of the bacterial ribosome. This action blocks the translocation of peptides, effectively stopping the production of essential proteins required for bacterial survival. It is primarily bacteriostatic, meaning it inhibits bacterial growth, though it can be bactericidal against certain susceptible strains depending on the concentration and the type of organism.
General Uses
This medication is utilized to manage a variety of mild-to-moderate infections caused by susceptible microorganisms. Because it remains in the body's tissues for an extended period, it is often characterized by shorter treatment courses compared to other antibiotic classes. Typical areas of application include:
