Overview of Tiberal
What is Tiberal?
Tiberal is an anti-infective medication containing the active substance ornidazole. It belongs to a class of drugs known as nitroimidazoles, which are specifically designed to treat infections caused by certain types of bacteria and protozoa.
Mechanism of Action
The active ingredient, ornidazole, works by interfering with the DNA structure of microorganisms. By disrupting their genetic material, the medication prevents these pathogens from reproducing and functioning, effectively neutralizing the infection. This action is specific to anaerobic bacteria—which thrive in environments without oxygen—and various parasitic protozoa.
Typical Applications
Tiberal is primarily utilized for the management of infections located in different parts of the body, including:
- Protozoal Infections: Conditions such as trichomoniasis, amoebiasis (including intestinal and hepatic forms), and giardiasis.
- Anaerobic Bacterial Infections: Infections involving the abdomen, gynecological system, or those occurring after surgical procedures where anaerobic bacteria are often present.
Because of its specific mechanism, the medication is only effective against susceptible strains of organisms and is not used for viral infections like the common cold or flu.
