Overview of Sedalac
What is Sedalac?
Sedalac is an oral solution containing lactulose, a synthetic derivative of lactose. It belongs to a group of medications known as osmotic laxatives. Unlike stimulant laxatives that act directly on the intestinal wall, Sedalac works by changing the way water is absorbed and processed within the colon.
Composition and Mechanism
Lactulose is a disaccharide consisting of the simple sugars fructose and galactose. Because the human body does not possess the specific enzymes required to break down lactulose in the upper gastrointestinal tract, the substance passes through the stomach and small intestine largely unchanged.
Upon reaching the colon, naturally occurring bacteria break down the lactulose into low-molecular-weight organic acids, such as lactic acid and acetic acid. This process results in two primary effects:
- Osmotic Pressure: The presence of these acids increases the osmotic pressure within the bowel, drawing water into the intestinal lumen.
- Stool Softening: The increased water content increases the volume of the stool and makes it softer, which helps to facilitate more regular bowel movements.
Clinical Applications
Sedalac is primarily utilized for the management of chronic constipation. By promoting a softer stool consistency and supporting the physiological rhythm of the colon, it helps alleviate the discomfort associated with infrequent or difficult bowel movements.
In addition to its use as a laxative, Sedalac is employed in the management of portal-systemic encephalopathy (PSE). In this context, the acidification of the colonic contents helps to trap ammonia (NH3) by converting it into ammonium ions (NH4^+). Since ammonium ions are not easily absorbed back into the bloodstream, they are eliminated from the body, which helps to lower systemic ammonia levels.
