Overview of Canta
Canta is the brand name for the active substance candesartan cilexetil, a prescription medication belonging to the class of drugs known as angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs). ARBs are primarily used to manage conditions related to the cardiovascular system.
Quick Facts
- Active Ingredient: Candesartan Cilexetil
- Drug Class: Angiotensin II Receptor Blocker (ARB)
- Primary Uses: High blood pressure (hypertension) and heart failure
Mechanism of Action and Uses
Candesartan cilexetil is a prodrug, meaning it is inactive until it is converted into its active form, candesartan, during absorption in the gastrointestinal tract. Candesartan works by specifically blocking the effects of a naturally occurring hormone called angiotensin II at the AT1 receptor site. Angiotensin II normally causes blood vessels to constrict and stimulates the retention of sodium and water, both of which raise blood pressure.
By blocking the AT1 receptors, Canta causes the blood vessels to relax and widen (vasodilation) and reduces the secretion of aldosterone, a hormone that promotes salt and water retention. The overall effect is a reduction in blood pressure and a decrease in the workload on the heart.
Candesartan is indicated for the treatment of high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and certain pediatric patients, as well as for the management of heart failure in adults. Lowering high blood pressure can reduce the risk of serious cardiovascular events such as stroke and heart attack.
