Overview of Amlostin
What is Amlostin?
Amlostin is a pharmaceutical medication containing the active ingredient amlodipine. It belongs to a class of drugs known as calcium channel blockers, which are primarily used to manage certain cardiovascular conditions.
Mechanism of Action
The medication works by inhibiting the movement of calcium ions into the vascular smooth muscle cells and cardiac muscle cells. By blocking these calcium channels, the medication helps the blood vessels to relax and widen. This process, known as vasodilation, reduces the resistance against which the heart must pump and improves blood flow throughout the body.
Primary Uses
Amlostin is typically utilized in the management of the following conditions:
- Hypertension: By relaxing the walls of the blood vessels, the medication helps to lower elevated blood pressure levels.
- Chronic Stable Angina: It is used to prevent the chest pain associated with coronary artery disease by improving the oxygen supply to the heart muscle.
- Vasospastic Angina: It can be used to manage Prinzmetal's or variant angina, which is caused by spasms in the coronary arteries.
As a long-acting treatment, the medication is designed to provide a steady effect over an extended period, helping to maintain consistent blood pressure control and reduce the frequency of angina episodes.
